Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is looking forward to being the underdog again in a pond where Birmingham City will be the biggest fish.
Hollywood-backed Wrexham will meet the Blues in League One next season after back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two. The Welsh side will be one to watch in the third tier under experienced boss Parkinson, 56, but he insists the Blues and some of the other big-hitters will be under far greater pressure.
Parkinson said, “Joining League One is really exciting because we are now joining a league with many teams that have recent Championship and Premier League experience,” in an interview with the Men In Blazers YouTube channel. Since I’ve been the manager of multiple high-profile teams in this division, it makes sense for us to go into a league where Wrexham isn’t the clear favorite or predicted to win.
There will be teams in this tier that are under a lot of pressure, like Birmingham, who were demoted.Their fans will expect to see Rotherham and Huddersfield close to the top of the league table. Although we won’t have as much attention next season, that doesn’t mean we won’t be trying to put together a strong team this summer.
Actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have contributed financially to Wrexham’s rise since its ownership in 2021. Sky Sports is anticipated to select which games between the Blues and Wrexham will be shown, most likely on their recently launched Sky Sports+ channel.
