The list of goalkeepers being considered to replace Celtic star Joe Hart allegedly includes free agent Koen Casteels. The 31-year-old began his ten-year career in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim and moved to Wolfsburg in 2015. The 6’6″ keeper was said to be returning to his native Belgium with Anderlecht, but that move might be thwarted by their inability to secure Champions League participation. The Daily Mail reports that Casteels is currently a contender to succeed Hart.
The former England keeper has been a smash hit in Glasgow, rejuvenating his career by playing a pivotal role in Celtic securing three consecutive Premiership titles. Koen Casteels insists his future hasn’t been sorted out but is set to be in demand as he heads to Euro 2024 with Belgium. Speaking to the Wolfsburg website, he said: “I don’t have a new club yet. We’ve already held initial talks, but it’s not 100 percent certain which club I’ll be playing for next season.”
“I’ll always have a connection to Wolfsburg and the club because my son was born there. After my playing career is done, Wolfsburg will undoubtedly be the team I spent the most time with and which helped me develop from a young player into a seasoned goalkeeper in the Bundesliga.”
