Phil Foden has shed light on the inspiration behind his latest goal celebration, which he unveiled during his impressive hat-trick performance for Manchester City against Brentford on Monday.
Despite trailing 1-0 to a Neal Maupay strike against the flow of play, Foden rose to the occasion with a memorable display, securing City’s victory with his second Premier League hat-trick.
His goals, scored just before halftime, propelled City into the lead, with the third goal showcasing a delightful combination with Erling Haaland.
After every goal, Foden was seen kneeling on the ground and making a unique gun-like gesture that was evocative of former Manchester United, PSG, and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani’s signature celebration.
Foden made it clear that his new celebration is a lighthearted response to remarks made by his teammates during workouts.
Foden said to City reporter FG during the team’s Matchday Live coverage, “It’s a bit of banter between me and the lads.” They say I shoot a lot in the five-a-side games. Among them, I go by “sniper” for short.
Foden is thriving in a central attacking midfield role and now has an astonishing eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season after his fantastic performance against Brentford.
Manager Pep Guardiola feels that Foden is having his greatest season yet wearing a Manchester City jersey, as he has already won two PFA Young Player of the Year honors.
Guardiola remarked in a post-match press conference, “We needed it [Foden’s performance] today. I think Phil is having the most influential season for the team in terms of goals and assists. How he played simple, how he can be more aggressive. He has the pleasure of scoring goals and is a threat when he’s close to their box. Always, he is there.
“So he’s an exceptional, exceptional player. He is [young] and already has more than 250 games for City; that shows the impact he has had since he arrived.”
With a game in hand, Manchester City now trail Liverpool by just two points and are set to face Everton in their next fixture on Saturday.
